World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for conversations. As a society, talking about suicide gives people who are suffering a space for expressing what they are feeling. They are able to consider new solutions for breaking the solitude and moving beyond the feelings of shame, despair, and powerlessness that are too often present. It is crucial that a community talk about suicide.

What is World Suicide Prevention Day?

Every year, September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day  (WSPD). Around the world, it is estimated that there is one suicide every 40 seconds and one suicide attempt every 3 seconds, meaning 1 million suicides each and every year. That is more than all the people killed by wars and natural disasters. On top of that, there are 10 million people grieving a suicide victim.  September 10 is a day for making our communities aware of how widespread the problem is and how to prevent it.

An initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, WSPD is recognized around the world. In the Eastern Townships, JEVI organizes events to start conversations about suicide.

WSPD is an opportunity to remember that we urgently need to take action to prevent suicide.

WSPD – September 10, 2025

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is an opportunity to remember the urgent need to take action in suicide prevention and to change the conversation about suicide!

JEVI invites the community to gather in large numbers and walk around Lac des Nations to collectively support those who have needed or currently need help, their loved ones, and people bereaved by suicide.

The walk will start at the Chalet 12-15, located at the entrance of Jacques-Cartier Park at 220 Marchant Street, Sherbrooke, at 6:30 p.m., following a welcome address from Tania Boilar, Executive Director of JEVI. A short stop is planned at the Marché de la Gare, where Sylvie, a JEVI trainer, will host an information booth on myths and realities surrounding suicide.

This walk is meant to be a unifying, reassuring, and moving event.

Participants who join us will enjoy a breathtaking view of Lac des Nations while engaging in real, meaningful conversations. Every conversation helps change perceptions about suicide and contributes to building a more compassionate and supportive society.

*This event will take place rain or shine.
